Souvenirs

What do you do when you travel and want to bring a T-shirt for your older kid, but they don't have the right size? Even the airport shops let you down?

Well, you copy the T-shirt design and have the T-shirt printed in your local T-shirt-printig-shop :-)

These are Latvian pagan symbols, representing luck and success, wisdom and wealth.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

Spend these holidays with people you love.

Doing things that you like.

And appreciate the precious time you're spending together.

I was away

And for the last time in 2022... I was away.

In Riga.

A true winter wonderland!

But not much of daylight...

Christmas cards!

All the Christmas cards are on their way, so it's time to publish this year's design.

The spoiler mystery is now solved: it was epoxy resin ;-)

I cut balsa wood in the shape of trees, painted them in different greens and poured several layers of epoxy, one including some pearl white powder.

And the magic behind it? There are also dots of glow-in-the-dark resin, which, well, glows in the dark :-)

I wonder how many recipients will notice this ;-)

Pre-Christmas baking

MiniMojcek Nr.2 is taking extra cooking classes at school. The other day he brought home the recipe for a chocolate star. Which we of course made at home:

The next time we made it, we replaced the chocolate filling with cinnamon filling (you know, the cinnamon rolls one)

... and ...

added some cardamom and lemon juice.

Now THAT is truly delicious!

So pretty!

I found the images of this beauty on my phone, from the recent trip to Aquilea:

The pieces fit so perfectly together, you can hardly believe this is a jigsaw puzzle!

Oh, yes, it is. And a beautiful one!

Ahmmm...

I am not a fan of business trips just before Christmas, but sometimes I don't have a choice.

So now that my mind is set to Christmas, I might actually enjoy this:

No, it's not the north pole.

But not that far either ;-)

Update:

this is the current webcam panoramic view of the city ;-)

Hmmm...

Birthday present

Say a very good friend of yours is celebrating her birthday.

And she explicitly asks for a Nijntje/Miffy bunny.

But you just cannot give the bunny as it is, right?

So you sew the bunny a red silk dress ;-)

And yes, this is real silk.

Leftovers from an old dress of mine.

And yes, I made her black lacy underwear as well :-)

I should have known Part 2

About I year ago, I was complaining about the Sufferfest takeover by Systm. What a disappointment.

Well, now it's time to complain again. This time it's Duolingo that's made some drastic changes. And by drastic I mean unforgivable. So I'm sticking to it for a few more days, to reach the 1000 day streak, then it's time to say goodbye.

Not all of us are linear learners, some of us want flexibility and choice. It's been nice knowing you, Duo.

Christmas card teaser

After abandoning the initial idea for this year's Christmas Cards, I've already got another one. Which seems too be working. But the utensils are ... rather unusual.

;-)

Something scary on Halloween

You want to hear something really scary for Halloween?

Almost 29 degrees in my country.

On the 31st of October.

But then again, if life gives you good weather, make the best of it, right ;-)

Music 2

And maybe it's time for a music update, what I've been listening to recently:

Piers Faccini - Diamond in the Mine

Gabriel Bruce - All that I have

Gioli & Assia - Eurydice

Yann Tiersen - The Long Road

Kid Francescoli - Moon

Indochine - Karma Girls

Worakls - Porto

A lot of emotions and feelings in just about every single one of these songs.

Music 1

The music that's playing in shops is usually not quite my cuppa tea. But there were some notable exceptions, as this for example is how I learned about Madrugada or Jardier.

But just the other day I went to my local Decathlon and there it was: Rammstein's Zeit album.

Now I'm not a huge fan of Rammstein but it's definitely a very different shopping experience when there is loud Rammstein echoing around the aisles :-)

Grown up.

You know you're grown up when you wake up on a Sunday morning and think: "Today is the perfect day to clean the windows."

Yes, I am that old.

And yes, I did clean them.

Italian lakes

And we were off again.

Sea and ceilings

Well, first of all, I was away.

The coast was beautiful ...

... but the beaches even nicer when immersed in fog!

I've seen also a lot of interesting ceilings. For example one in Batalha:

one in Monserrate:

 and another one in Sintra:

Summer is over.

You know the summer is over, when:

- you have to put on your jeans in the morning. After about four months of wearing skirts, dresses and shorts.

- all the rain that did not fall during one of the driest summers ever, falls down in just one weekend.

- they are shooting Christmas commercials in the park nearby and half of the park is covered with (artificial) snow.

- and yes, I am already assembling material for a possible prototype of this year's Christmas cards.

Yes, summer is definitely over.

I do owe quite a few updates, don't I?

Summery

Yes, I feel summery. Joyful. Colourful. Almost like a parrot ;-)

Possibly you noticed (probably you didn't) that the far left and the far right dresses are the same pattern. That is because I bought the right one, liked the fit so much that I made myself a copy of it :-D

Frustrating waves

I've always been a fan of tiny puzzles. The cuteness of the pieces gets me every time.

However, a tiny puzzle needs to be of super high quality. And this one unfortunately isn't. The shapes are repetitive, sloppily designed and probably even badly cut. The contrast on the colours is poor. There are so many false ways these pieces 'fit' together that it's becoming frustrating. I will of course solve it but it is not the fun I was hoping it to be.

Oh well.

Holidays!

 Aaand... we've been away again.

A family of "cinghiali" crossing our path in broad daylight!

Crowds at the Elviscot shipwreck.

The wreck itself is impressive.
Creepy. But impressive.

Update

I just realised I haven't posted for a while...

One of the reasons is that I've been away. Again :-)

Enjoying some classic Tuscany landscape... and some wonderful Tuscan art.

And some classic views:

Another reason is that after successfully avoiding covid for over two years, I now tested positive :-(

Red and red and more red...

No, I'm not complaining.

We've got about 15 kg of red currant from our garden.

And this year we ended up having a lot of cherries as well...

So red currant jam, red currant-strawberry jam, frozen red currant, frozen cherries, cherry strudel, cherry cake, cherry clafoutis, cherry-red currant jam...

And we haven't even started harvesting the sour cherries! They need one to two more weeks to ripen.

Pax et bonum

Is there a special club for people whose bicycles had been stolen?

Count me in.

And while I do wish Pax et Bonum to everyone, to you, who stole our bikes, I wish that the ebike battery explodes.

Umbria is still pretty, though.

I've been away :-)

A lot of "aways" recently ;-)

This time to an interesting old town in Austria.

 I did say Austria, right?

Music

A few days ago I was reminded by a very good friend of mine of Cohen's Anthem

It brought back memories...

Yes, this is a T-shirt I painted with the album cover.

But then I accidentally heard Gabriel Bruce's El Musgo

And I am happy.
